Myths and Magic (October 2000)
Comments from Bernard Lee of the Sheffield Telegraph:
“E lucevan le stelle (Tosca) - Neil Dunn again revealing a voice many professional tenors would sell their soul for and ... Christine Stubbs and Mike Tipler taking the Phantom singing laurels for All I ask. The most potent vocal magic was in top quality performances from Sharon Nicholson-Skeggs - intense performances of Pace Pace and Casta Diva; Stephen Godward - especially as Doctor Dulcamara (Elixir of Love) ...and Joanna Shacklock - after a fine Song to the Moon magnificent as Marguerite in the final scene from Gounod’s Faust.”
Love and Music (February 2000)
Review from Sheffield Telegraph:
“A full house, on a Sunday of all days, certainly wasn’t disappointed with Sheffield City Opera's mix of two dozen items from opera, operetta and musical strung together as a celebration for Valentine’s Day.
“Rather cleverly semi-staged and admirably conducted by Andrew Marples who coped impressively with the wide stylistic diversity, there was a party atmosphere with the chorus sitting at tables sipping red wine...
“No-one was found wanting, far from it, though the chorus needs a few more male voices. Selecting high points is invidious but crying out for mention are a Madam Butterfly Love Duet from Sharon Nicholson-Skeggs and Nick Sales which would have graced any stage, Christine Ayres and Mike Tipler’s superbly done Do You Love Me?, Mitzi Maclock’s wholly idiomatic But Not For Me, the fabulous quality of Val Parker’s mezzo voice, whatever she sang and Rod Hunt's Rigoletto in the Quartet from Verdi’s opera, a mini-masterclass on how to colour and use words.
“Mark Langley, who devised the programme, engagingly compered it...”
